Knowing where you were, I think you probably walked right past the best place in town. Well, the upstairs is a student-dive horror, but the downstairs Pils Klub has an excellent selection of beers, a fireplace, and a laid-back sort of pub feel.

Most of the time, anyway. During the medieval conference it's full of crusty academic types getting drunk out of their minds and singing Middle-English drinking songs at the top of their lungs. You were probably better off anyway.

Kalamazoo is a nicer place than it was when you visited it, I think, but there are more jobs leaving now than there used to be. If you come again in another ten years it may be exactly the way you remember it.
